1 /5 Kinleigh Gatlin: I came in by ambulance Mercy Medical Center due to severe back pain and total numbness from the waist down. The doctor did not examine me, did not even touch me. I was taken for X-rays and given Tylenol by the nurse. That was the extent of my treatment. I asked to use the restroom twice because I was waiting for 7hrs. I was unable to walk and stand so the nurse had to take me to the restroom. She could visably see I was struggling and I told her I had the urge to use the restroom but was physically unable to due to the total lower body numbness. This was a new symptom with my back pain I had never experienced before. Upon returning from the restroom the second time the nurse left me in a wheelchair in the doorway of another patients room stating the doctor was discharging me although he never even saw me. The doctor Soliman Atai came to speak with me and my husband telling me I was going home and my X-rays were fine. I explained to him I had no ability to walk and he said “I can get you some crutches or whatever. You will be fine and pain free in the morning. Tomorrow you will be doing jumping jacks”. I began crying and he then said “I can do an MRI but it will be only for you to ease your mind and will not change my discharge instructions whatever the result is”. I felt so uncomfortable with whatever this doctor called “care” and was discharged. I went to Emanuel Medical Center after leaving Mercy due to bladder rentention/unable to urinate as the nurse as Mercy knew but did not care or even seem to think worrisome. Once arriving at Emanuel I was diagnosed with severe spinal stenosis, saddle anesthesia, cauda equina & transferred to Doctors Medical Center for an emergency microdiscectomy on the L4 & L5. Does that sound like doing jumping jacks doctor? He put my life in danger by not even examining or treating me. I visually saw the doctor for two minutes of a 7 hour ER visit. I may never be able to fully walk again or have proper urinary or bowel functions without medical intervention due to the 7hrs I wasted waiting for medical treatment of cauda equina and saddle anesthesia. What an absolute joke this hospital is allowed to “treat” patients this way. My life will never be the same due to this horrible visit.
