1 /5 Elijah Erskine: Awful. I had to explain that Iâm trans so many times. And they didnât believe me. I changed my legal gender, so when I told them about getting hit by a car and miscarrying⊠they just ignored me. They believed that I got hit by a car (it was pretty damn obvious)- but wouldnât supply pads or diapers or anything for the bleeding until it was all over the hospital bed. Underwear was a struggle, and itâs sold at the hospital gift shop.
I needed psychiatric help, badly. Instead, they sent out a prescribing doctor. He immediately offered me Valium and benzodiazepines. Iâm an alcoholic- itâs very much on my chart- and he offered me addictive substances while I was grieving and in pain. He offered me another relapse when I was incredibly vulnerable.
So I asked for lamictal. A mood stabilizer that Iâve been prescribed, and ran out of. The doctor prescribed the lowest possible dose after a lot of arguing. He was a GP, after all- not a psych. But he was sure ready to supply Benzos. It was absolutely awful.
