3 /5 JT: A Mixed Bag on the Boardwalk
My boyfriend and I were looking for a classic San Diego beach brunch and decided to try World Famous. We arrived around 10 am on a Sunday and were told the wait would be about 40 minutes. Luckily, we got a text that our table was ready in only 20 minutes, which was a pleasant surprise. We were seated outside in a shady spot, which was perfect since it was already getting hot.
The one major drawback was the strict menu schedule. I have an egg allergy, so I was hoping to order from the lunch menu, but we were told the kitchen wouldnt start those orders for another 45 minutes. It would be great if they could be more flexible with allergies. When I was finally able to order, I got the fish and chips without the chips due to a potato allergy and chose a side salad instead. The fish was a bit heavy on the batter, but it was flavorful. The side salad was pretty standard, nothing special. A suggestion for the menu would be to offer sweet potato fries as an alternative for people with nightshade allergies.
My boyfriend had a much better experience. He ordered the World Famous Wipeout and said the bacon was perfect and the pancakes were delicious. Our server was very sweet and attentive throughout our meal. The Drunken Mermaid cocktail was also a hit!
We would consider going back, but next time we’ll aim to arrive closer to lunch service to avoid the wait for the kitchen to open the lunch menu. Overall, a nice spot with good service, but the menu constraints were a significant issue for my allergies.
