06-2025 Washoe Meadows State Park in Hight rate 15 location for tourist in South Lake Tahoe, CA, USA (part 2)Cascade Falls - South Lake Tahoe Ayden Castro: There’s ups and downs in the middle of trail, rocky terrain that’s manageable. I saw old people, father’s with babies on their back doing this hike as well as dogs and kids. You’ll be alright, just watch your step especially on the rocks and rocks with dirt on em. They can be slippery. The waterfall has multiple waterfalls, and the water is cold. There is also a nice view of Lake Cascade and the falls from a distance.
Ed Zberg Sugar Pine Point State Park - Tahoma Nikolai Mannsfeld: This was the view spot on the highway. There was plenty of camping spots available, some cool historic buildings they had available for tours, great dock, great trail, and amazing water. We loved seeing the blue, clear, and cold water. Highly recommend this viewing spot!
Bijou Dog Park - South Lake Tahoe Murillo Pontual: This is a great dogs park in Tahoe. They have free parking. The dogs park is separated in three parts: little dogs, large dogs and active activities section. My dogs had a lots of fun in the exercise area. I highly recommend it.
Angora Ridge Lookout - William Johnson: Wonderful overlook with stunning views. The road is one lane and requires pulling over when another vehicle is going the opposite direction. Also the the first couple hundred feet of the road is gravel with lots of potholes, but then turns into blacktop the rest of the way. Dont let the first part of the road discourage you. The drive is totally worth it. The reward of the overlook is spectacular! Highly recommend!
Hellman-Ehrman Mansion - Tahoma Alexis Roucourt: Gotta love landmarks that dont update their opening season details and waste peoples time. Sure, magnificent spot but suggest to call ahead: maps says open until 4pm today and the attached photo is the sad reality.
High Meadow Trailhead - South Lake Tahoe Daniel Flores: We were fortunate to have rented a house near the High Meadow Trailhead, which turned out to be an excellent choice for our Labor Day weekend. The trail offers a combination of access roads and actual trails that are suitable for most visitors. The trailhead split at the end of the road and further down the dirt road provides decent parking facilities.
Although Lake Tahoe is not visible from this trail, it winds through the mountains, making it worth the effort. Its a popular spot for locals, with mountain bikers and trail runners sharing the space with hikers. The main trail follows Cold Creek, a charming little creek that flows up into the mountains.
The combination of trails and landscapes makes this place special. Although the presence of bikers can be a little annoying, the stunning scenery is worth it. My crew enjoyed the wide and soft areas for running, but even I enjoyed a leisurely walk in the woods. Since most of the trails are not a loop, its essential to pace yourself.
Overall, we were pleased to have discovered this gem in the rural part of South Lake Tahoe. It was a refreshing change to encounter many locals on the trail. Its advisable to bring water since there are no water fountains on the trail. High Meadow Trailhead is a fantastic mountain forest trail, as long as you steer clear of the bikes.
Kit Carson Pass - South Lake Tahoe Ryan Stephens: This is a beautiful spot to hike. From the parking lot to Winnemucca Lake is an easy 2.5 miles with little elevation change.
Part of the trail is shared with the famous PCT.
If you come during the right time of the year you will be treated with amazing high Sierra meadows full of wildflowers.
Snow can last long into summer, although the trail is normally clear by July.
Fannette Island Tea House - South Lake Tahoe Kelly L: Wish I had brought a waterproof camera bag to take photos from the tea house. We arrived by boat, anchored out, and swam to the island. The hike up was rocky but short. Very crowded. A lot of people were barefoot and looked just fine, but I was glad to be in Keens. Interesting story behind the structure and worth a visit to Vikingholm.
Bayview Trailhead - South Lake Tahoe Maria Prince: This trail will take you to the beautiful Cascade Falls. The hike up to the trail is easy to moderate depending on endurance and strength in order to be able to climb up and down steep rocks. The pathway has a lot of sand which makes the hike a bit slippery without proper shoes. The trail is on the side of the mountain which allows a perfect view of Emerald Bay as you make your way up and down the falls. We spent some time just viewing the gorgeous lake and the falls. Overall it is a beautiful place to hike. Make sure to get there early as parking is limited. There is a fee of $10, and will allow access to Bay View Trail, Desolation Trail and Inspiration Point.
