3 /5 viswesh muralitharan: Our team visited Mayan Kitchen in Sunnyvale’s downtown on Murphy Avenue for lunch. One standout positive was their surprisingly large selection of vegan options, which can be hard to find in Mexican-style cuisine. This made it a convenient spot for a group with varied dietary preferences.
We tried a couple of their specialty drinks , the brown rice horchata and the tamarind agua fresca both of which were refreshing and nicely balanced. For appetizers, the fried plantains were delicious and well-prepared. However, the other starters, like the chips and salsa, came in very small portions for the price. The same goes for the charred cauliflower, which tasted good but included only 5–6 pieces and felt significantly overpriced.
As for the entrées, the general consensus from both vegan and meat eaters at the table was that the dishes were just okay and nothing particularly memorable or standout in terms of flavor or authenticity. The churros were another letdown: we received just one, and it wasn’t especially impressive, yet priced on the higher side.
The highlight of the visit was definitely the friendly and attentive service. Still, while the ambiance and staff were great, the food felt overpriced for the portions and overall taste quality.
Overall, Mayan Kitchen offers great service and an admirable range of vegan options, but the menu could benefit from more generous portions and stronger flavors to match its price point.
