5 /5 Sebastian Urtiz: I originally signed up for AMP in 2019 and have seen an incredible improvement in my fitness. They have recently moved locations to 14th and Olympic in Santa Monica (originally on 19th and Olympic) and the additional space is superb! You have an indoor area where most of the workouts take place, locker rooms with showers and an outside area with picnic benches, coffee shop, sauna, cold plunge and even more workout equipment (if you like to get your tan on while training).
AMP is great for people at any level of fitness because they offer many different types of classes and a very flexible schedule. Personally, my favorite is the Hybrid class where you first have a Strength portion either working squats, deadlifts, push press, bench etc., followed by a WOD which is usually a pretty intense workout that may incorporate some lift like thrusters, snatches, power cleans, STOH and cardio on the machines (row, ski erg, bike erg, echo bike), jump rope, box jumps or a run. But, if you’re not into that style, they also have a Strength class, Open Gym, Olympic Lifting, and various workshops, like a Mobility class for example. There’s workouts every day of the week. Monday-Friday starting at 5am going to 7pm usually, and Saturdays and Sundays starting at 8am. They also have special events that could be fundraisers for charity, beach workouts or their annual AMP Invitational.
Above all, the best part about AMP is the community – the owners, coaches and members. Alex and Ahnna started the gym in 2018, participate in workouts, encourage you when you’re struggling and give you specific tips on areas for improvement. Recently, I was experiencing a bit of discomfort in my elbow area and Ahnna told me that could be due to tight lats and showed me some stretches which has been helping. The coaches, Jake, Leah, Nick, Sarah, Danny, Amanda, Nadya, Nikita, Gus, Juvie, Zack are awesome people, very knowledgeable, they break down each movement, can help you modify a specific activity, keep an eye on each member during the workout and are also very encouraging to keep going the WODs. The members are incredibly awesome, very supportive, help each other out, pick up the weights/barbells, reset the gym before the next class and you can expect a high-five, fist-bump after going through the wringer together. I’d consider many of them friends.
If you’ve been thinking about trying something new or already familiar with Crossfit and want to check it out AMP – you will not be disappointed!
