2 /5 Erika Joiner: Emergency Room Care is Poor and Slow
**Positives:** The receptionist was pleasant and friendly. However, the intake nurses bedside manner could use some improvement. The Physician Assistant (PA) in the room was actually good—professional and skilled at assssing her patients. Kudos to both the PA and the receptionist!
**Negatives:** We arrived at 10:45 AM, and there were only two other patients in the lobby. By 11:00 AM, we had seen the PA, but now, at 1:40 PM, the same two patients, along with nine others, are still waiting to be seen. The lobby is full, and everyone has already seen the PA and had their X-rays taken.
After three hours, we have not received any care. No one has come out to reassure or reassess the patients, and meanwhile, the staff members are on their phones.
At 2:30 PM, I returned to the receptionist. The manager was very kind and supportive. Within five minutes, we were called into a room. The respiratory therapist was present and immediately began providing excellent care for about 15 minutes. Once he left, we waited 30 minutes for the PA to return and inform us we could leave. She told us the nurse would be in shortly. However, 45 minutes later, we are still waiting to be discharged. Meanwhile, there are three nurses and a rude PA outside my room discussing non-work-related activities.
Its 4pm. We have been here for six hours to receive just 15 minutes of care.
Unfortunately, our asthma equipment was destroyed in a fire, and we do not have a machine or an inhaler.
