I’ve explored this trail in both winter and spring, and each season offers its own appeal. In spring, be prepared for muddy paths and puddles, so bring shoes you don’t mind getting dirty in. Even the parking lot has its share of potholes. Despite that, the trail is alive with vibrant green grasslands, open skies, and the fresh, clean scent of nature. Winter transforms the landscape into something more darkly calm yet equally beautiful. Its a season of brisk icy air yet refreshing.
The trail is a mix of grasslands with scattered oak and eucalyptus trees. On clear days, you can spot Mount Saint Helena from the Highway 12 entrance and vineyards if you enter through Occidental Road. It stretches 1.8 miles and eventually leads to Kelly Pond, a perfect spot for bird watchers. There are two access points: one at 5420 Occidental Road, which has 8 parking spaces, bike racks, and a portable restroom, and another at 6303 Highway 12, which features 12 parking spaces, bike racks, three spaces for horse trailers, and trash/recycling bins. Both entrances are wheelchair-accessible, and the trail itself is mostly flat with gentle slopes, making it easy and enjoyable for walkers of all ages. Dogs are welcome except on the pedestrian-only segment, and there are picnic tables for families, although there’s no playground.
This trail is perfect for a leisurely walk, whether you’re starting or ending your day. It offers enough time to soak in the scenery without being too strenuous. Safari West - Santa Rosa andy Light: My whole experience at safari west was enjoyable but there was one person in particular who made the trip truly magical. Our tour guide Gina was absolutely amazing! This women deserves praise and a raise. She went above and beyond the whole tour. She was fun and informative and whenever a question was asked she didn’t know the answer to she radioed the other employees for an answer. I was sitting on a bench with my brother and she came over and asked if she could take a picture of us on my phone because we looked so cute together, that was such a sweet and thoughtful gesture that was really appreciated. Thank you Gina for the excellent tour!
DeMeo Park - Santa Rosa RODRIGUEZ Hazel “Haz”: I played in this park as a child. So I love the area that its in and it is very peaceful and quiet. And that big old tree, I used to climb that as a kid.I really loved to be able to come back and see the park was still there.
Sugarloaf Ridge State Park - Kenwood Kevin Petersen: Great hike offering great views of Sonoma valley. Some signs that are still out say some of the trails are closed but they were open when you hiked to them. Very fun way to spend half a day in Sonoma!
Bayer Park & Gardens - Santa Rosa Steven Jetton: Extremely small parking lot. Sometimes, I have to park on the street when it is available. Otherwise, it is a park that has a playground for children, a basketball court, a picknick with barbecues and benches for eating, a tetherball or volleyball court, a small skateboard area with a small ramp, some raised edges for doing tricks, and a grassy area for other activities. Bathrooms are portapoties, no sinks for washing hands.
Cyclisk - Santa Rosa Greg Rafferty: Middle of nowhere, not worth going out of your way to see. However, if youre in the market for a new Kia and find yourself at Jim Bone Kia looking at inventory, then maybe you could take a glance out the window at this thing and that wouldnt be a complete waste of time.
Pepperwood Preserve - Santa Rosa Sandy M: Came here on for a class to learn about mushrooms. It’s a gorgeous facility with breathtaking views. We hunted for mushrooms and collected samples for the center to use as data for their research. That day we found 50+ different species, ranging from chanterelles, lion’s mane, oyster mushrooms and so forth. Be aware, this is a non-profit nature preserve and you need to check the schedule for events open to the public - you aren’t able to just show up anytime.
Luther Burbank Home & Gardens - Santa Rosa briantravelman: Gardens were nice, but nothing worth making a special trip for. The house was unimpressive. Maybe if wed gone inside and taken a tour, wed feel different.
We have something similar in our own town, thats maybe even nicer, so it was pretty underwealming.
