Alum Rock Park is a hidden gem for nature lovers and hikers in the heart of San Jose. The park offers stunning scenery, well-maintained trails, and a peaceful atmosphere that makes it perfect for everything from a quick walk to a full-day hike. The wildlife is active (especially in the early mornings), and there are plenty of shaded areas for rest and picnicking.
The trails vary in difficulty, so whether youre a beginner or an experienced hiker, theres something here for you. The views from the top of the Eagle Rock trail are worth the climb! Also, the natural rock formations and historic mineral springs give the park a unique character.
Parking is generally available, though it can get crowded on weekends. There are restrooms, picnic areas, and signage to help guide you through the trail network.
Highly recommend this park if youre looking for a quick nature escape without leaving the city!
Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum - San Jose jana hughey: We had a long layover in San Jose California. We wanted to get out of the airport for a bit. This place was really close to the Airport so we decided to give it a try. It was really neat to see all of the relics from the past. They have a good selection. We enjoyed it. My youngest was really impressed. We are glad that we stepped away from the airport to experience this.
Happy Hollow Park & Zoo - San Jose RB: Took my 4-year-old daughter to Happy Hollow yesterday and we had such a blast! This place really hits the sweet spot for families with young kids. The zoo portion was definitely the highlight for us. My daughter was absolutely mesmerized by the lemurs, we probably stood there for 20 minutes just watching them play and swim around. The farm animals were a huge hit too, especially the goats that she could pet and feed. The staff was super patient with all the excited kids asking a million questions. What I love about this place is that its not overwhelming like some of the bigger attractions. Its the perfect size for little legs and short attention spans. The rides are gentle and age-appropriate we went on the little train probably four times! The carousel was beautiful and my daughter felt so grown up riding by herself. The playground areas are well-maintained and there are plenty of shaded spots for parents to sit and watch. Plus the admission price is really reasonable compared to other family attractions in the Bay Area. We ended up staying almost the entire day, which never happens with my preschooler! Shes already asking when we can go back. Definitely found our new favorite weekend spot. If you have kids under 8, this place is absolutely worth the trip to San Jose!
San Jose Museum of Art - San Jose Edgar Gonzalez Aparicio: On my first visit to SJ, the exhibitions were excellent. Unfortunately, there was no bike rack outside, but you can leave your bike inside.
I wish I had known in advance that it was the first Thursday of the month. I arrived half an hour early and it would have been nice if the staff had informed me. Theres no discount for Bay Area residents.
Plaza de Cesar Chavez - San Jose Sonia Rodriguez: I had a blast at Christmas in the park I got a churro and Cotton candy it was fun picking out a design I havent been here in a long time it was nice
Winchester Mystery House - San Jose Rosa Ford: Ive been wanting to visit the mansion for a very long time now!! We did a 2pm Saturday tour with add on basement tour!! I recommend purchasing the tickets ahead of time on line for a smooth check in. Tours start on time!! Our tour was a big group which included a Great Dane service dog and 2 kids! The tour guide ( an older gentleman) was AWESOME !! Dad jokes and all!! Since our group was on the bigger side and some of the rooms are small a few times we found ourselves in the hallway! Thankfully the tour guide was loud enough for us to hear! I feel as though I would need to go a second or third time to have a chance to see everything on the tour. The tour is definitely rushed ( there are multiple tours going on at the same time!) The mansion itself is extremely interesting! There are many empty spaces through out the house! There are only a few original furniture pieces left along with many donated items. Things to consider: the mansion is in rough condition! Many many people every day and its age!! There are many uneven floors and different heights! There are small odd rooms, doorways , nooks , hidden spots!! There are many stairs through out the mansion all of them are small odd size and length! The hand rails are very low and unable to use! You are not allowed to sit or touch anything including no leaning against walls! The mansion has several unfinished rooms and dust I wish i would have taken a mask!! Highly recommend taking one !! There is signage through out the mansion , that said … we were rushed by many and we were unable to read them!! The tour from start from finish takes about a hour/ hour 15 minutes!! We had the basement add on! This part is self guided!! There is not much to see!! Practically Empty hallways. Then one of my favorite areas was the gardens with many fountains!! My other favorite area was the stables !! I am totally fascinated by the mansion!! I do not think it is haunted at all… I would definitely recommend visiting!!
There is a huge gift shop with a cafe inside!!! There is an area available for events on the property!!! It was worth the almost 2 hour drive!!
Monopoly in the Park - San Jose Hannah Ruth: Fun to see a giant-scale monopoly board in a park. There are park seats, tables and chairs (some equipped with chess boards), fun animal statues, some giant artwork, and a large open space. A nice place to sit and relax. Kid-friendly. Easy to walk to.
Discovery Meadow - San Jose Aditya Joshi: We attended 76th India Independence Day celebration here on 08/12. It was well organized and lots of activities for kids and adults. Dance and singing contestants were pretty good. There were fun activities for kids as well. Overall we enjoyed food and fun activities here.
Municipal Rose Garden - San Jose Subir Das: It was such a beautiful experience spending a lazy Sunday afternoon in this amazing place!
Roses of many varieties, colours and fragrances fill up different parts of the park and a walk through the park takes you into another world. The plants are very well maintained and one does not stop getting enchanted with the different colours of roses with their distinct fragrances, shapes and sizes.
An ideal place to take in the beauty of nature with family or friends. One can have a picnic in the shade or under the Sun as you please. Clean toilets and provision of drinking water adds to the convenience.
It has a free entrance from all sides of the park and there is a playground on one side. Parking is available on the roads on all sides and clean toilets and provision of drinking water in the park add to the convenience.
A place not to be missed if you are visiting San Jose in the spring season!
Japanese Friendship Garden - San Jose Katrina Jenkins: I was excited to bring my baby to celebrate her turning 10 months at a park I hear has amazing cherry blossoms. A park said to represent the friendship of the sister cities our San Jose and Okayama Japan. Well it seems the friendship needs a little attention. First of the ponds have no water except the one in the back with the coy and seemingly booty water. I love the look and peaceful decor throughout the park and house on site looks like a space for meditation or something. Highlight definitely was seeing a family of ducks and little chicks. So cute I have never seen this up close in real life and when I inched closer to get a photo the mom or dad looked at me with their eyes warning me of a parents dedication and protection and I let them be. Lowlight was that I pulled my daughter in a wagon and I would not say it is wheelchair friendly park because I dangerously had to pull her in her carriage up a hill. Thank god she was buckled in or she would have tumbled out. Parking lot on site and the pay station was broken so it was free. I did change the spot where I parked initially because there was a troublesome lady drinking a 40 in the parking lot so I moved close to a bus that was parked there and I figured he would see or deter any funny business. Overall a great day and experience and I will be back again in hopes of water in the ponds and to look at all the beautiful flowers.
