5 /5 Jessica Ostrowski: My husband and I wanted to try somewhere new to us for dinner this evening and found Mahogany Soul Food in a Google search. Its tucked back on Parker Road just outside of the Air Base. The space is clean and tidy, currently with some festive holiday touches. We were warmly greeted when we entered by the chef (I believe she is also the proprietor), and our noses were greeted with wonderful, mouth-watering smells from the kitchen. We looked over the menu and had to take a few minutes to decide what we wanted because we were torn between several delicious-sounding options! Hubby finally landed on the smothered pork chop with black-eyed peas, and I decided on the shrimp and grits (add bacon and cheese!) with the red beans and rice. We also ordered a peach cobbler. As we waited for our takeout, we sipped on a Fanta and a Kool-aid. There is perfectly made Kool-aid prepared in large to-go cups in the fridge near the counter, and I really enjoyed mine! After about 15 minutes of hanging out, chatting a bit with the proprietor, and enjoying the music playing over the speaker, our order was ready to go. We eagerly made our way home to dig in. Not gonna lie- had to start with just a bite of the peach cobbler. It was delectable!- sweet, syrupy, and the flavor was top notch. I had to try some of hubbys pork chop- it was cooked and flavored perfectly, the brown gravy on top was some of the best gravy Ive had, and the chop was served with a generous portion of gravy-topped rice. SO yummy. I absolutely LOVED my shrimp and grits. The shrimp were big and meaty, and coated with the perfect amount of the most delicious crispy coating. I devoured the shrimp and grits and moaned a "MM MM!" with every bite. The black-eyed peas and red beans and rice were also very good, and the corn muffins were some of the best we have had; I could taste a perfect amount of butter cozily melted in to the muffins top. Needless to say, we got too full to finish the cobbler (the lesson here is to ALWAYS start with a bite of dessert!). I have the cobbler safely tucked away to enjoy later. It is so nice to have found a local spot nearby our home with epic eats and such warm service. We cant wait to go back to try more of the amazing menu (next time well definitely be trying the fried chicken and either jambalaya or a shrimp poboy - maybe all three for us!). We will be back soon!
