3 /5 Patrick Vuong: Bottom Line Up Front:
Poached Kitchen has everything you would want in a cool breakfast spot, from the menu and decor to the service and aesthetics -- everything except the delicious food.
The Food:
Let me explain. Its not bad. But its not as delicious as I had hoped, given the premium prices. My wife and I ordered the chicken and waffles, smash burger with fries, and a side of bacon.
The chicken was lightly breaded when I prefer it to be crispy while the meat was pretty dry. It was average at best. My wifes burger was OK; again, not bad but nothing to write home about. The fries lacked the seasoning and crispness that I expect from an American-style diner. Sadly, the bacon wasnt crunchy at all and a little on the chewy side. The only thing that was genuinely delicious was the waffles -- light, airy, and just a hint of sweetness.
The Service:
The entire staff was fast, friendly, and knowledgeable. Excellent training by the management.
The Overvalued Setup:
Another reason for my good-but-not-great rating is that this is a fast-casual restaurant. You walk up and order at the front counter like a fast-food joint but you wait to be seated and they bring the dishes out to you. However, you dont get a dedicated server so no one will attend to you and youll need to flag someone down for help. Nothing wrong with that, per se ... except that the meal prices are as high as sit-down full-service restaurants.
The Location:
Its located at the corner of Imperial Highway and Santa Ana Canyon Road, tucked inside a shopping complex with a poorly designed parking lot. (Its beside the Bev Mo.) Parking can be difficult to find during peak hours.
Inside, the place is clean and well organized, with comfortable chairs. The bathroom has a shared sink space in the open, while individual toilets are behind fully closed doors. Thats a convenient set up if you just want to wash your hands.
The Conclusion:
I really wanted to love this place but was disappointed by the average-tasting food sold for above average prices in a fast-casual setting -- definitely less bang for the buck. Will I try it again? Possibly, to try the other menu items in hopes this was just an off day for the cook.
