  • 21 Grams Gym - Arcata
Matt Koscielniak: This is the best gym in the area. Small class sizes, very knowledgeable coaches, plenty of open gym time, and a strategic training schedule which progressively builds functional strength while correcting imbalances. When I began training here I was weak in a couple areas and had some nagging injuries. Now I feel strong and confident. Awesome gym!
    Movewell - Arcata
STEM Teacher: Movewell is my favorite fitness studio in Humboldt! The space is gorgeous, all the instructors that I have worked with have been fun and knowledgable, and the owner is always finding ways to give back to her community. They have great pilates classes, and I have also liked their yoga and mama & baby classes.
    Fit Nor Cal - Arcata
Richard Polillo: Grace Gibson is the personal trainer I go to at Fit NorCal. She designs diabolically grueling workouts that allows me to push to my limits each any every time I train. Last Dec I had surgery that left me on life support for a 7 days, was then discharged on day 9 with an incidental finding of B lymphoma. I could barley walk and started chemotherapy the next month, Jan of ‘17. By end of Feb treatments completed and left me with debilitating foot drop R side and I’d lost over 30 lbs. I started rehabbing my self immediately. I found Grace in mid May of ‘17 and have been steadily progressing ever since. To her credit and her evil gut wrenching workouts I’ve been able to return to the study of my beloved Aikido a intense form of martial art. Grace cudo’s to you, you are a great coach and your manical giggling, while you put me through tasks that Hercules could not perform, has ignited my recuperation I cannot thank you enough. Does this review give you any idea why it is a 5 star?
Stilwell Health and Fitness - Arcata
Jim Falls: Jeremiah is always encouraging. I like machines, and he always explains the muscle-skeleton system so I understand the “what” and “why” I’m doing my various exercises. We live in machines made of flesh and bone, and Jeremiah is an ace mechanic. Some context: I was in a bad ATV crash 9 years ago and was technically all healed up, but still had chronic pain in my back, no stamina, and weakness and sciatica in my bad leg. I felt old and broken and was not fun to be around. A year and a half ago, my family “got sick and tired of me feeling sick and tired” and ganged up on me. To appease them, I agreed to visit Jeremiah at Intentional Fitness for the first time. I was impressed from the beginning. He did a thorough workup to establish the probable sources my pain and weakness. I went thru a series of body measurements and muscle group strength evaluations to establish my baseline, and inform him where to start chipping away at those pain sources. The first thing was I learned how to stand and walk “differently”. What I thought and felt was standing straight correctly really wasn’t straight at all. I had adapted to my injuries by favoring the old injuries. That adaptation became “the new normal” and a handicap once my bones and muscles had healed. We focused on key muscle groups and better posture, and sure enough, the pain became much less problematic. When I forget to pay attention to my posture, the pain sneaks back in, but now I know how to knock it down quickly without meds. I’m able to do things I hadn’t done in years. I’m not Superman yet, and I have a long hiking trip with friends coming in the future, something I’d never have considered a year ago. We’re working on my stamina, strength training, and walking progressively longer distances using the tools he has taught me. I know when the time comes, I’ll be ready and it’s going to be fun!
Far North Climbing Gym - Arcata
JR: The only climbing gym in Humboldt other than the rec center at the University (that I know of). The staff have made some big improvements since the last time I was there. Theyve gone back to the standard boulder ratings. They opened a new space in the back and added a Kilter board and are soon going to get a Moon board and Tension board. The pads were in good shape, the staff were very friendly, and the price was reasonable for a drop-in. They also let us bring our little ones (under 4) in for free. Also to note, while everywhere else is increasing their prices, they actually lowered their monthly membership! Thank you on behalf of the community!
    Institute of Combat - Arcata
Jay Humboldt: My children have been training at Institute of Combat for 4 years. The staff are all experienced, focused, and knowledgeable in wrestling and martial arts. They have built a solid and smooth program that easily integrates students of all levels. Since the very beginning, the highly experienced team of trainers, led by MMA expert Cass Bell, have treated us like family. They have helped instill sportsmanship and maintained high standards and expectations, ensuring that students step into a positive learning environment, with an attitude of perseverance in reaching their goals. Through their coaching, we have been able to develop technical skills and solid athlete- mindsets, aligning with our familys key values. What they have to offer reaches beyond the training facility, and will have a lasting impact on all of our lives. -Sarah, Mom of three IOC students
