1 /5 lindamohrmann: First and foremost, I fully support the mission of the thrift store. Over the past three months, I have shopped there frequently, spending just under $800. I truly love the store.
Today, while shopping, I received an urgent call regarding wound treatment for a dog. I initially attempted to handle the call inside but quickly realized it required my full attention. Respecting the store environment, I decided to step outside to continue my conversation. My car was parked near the entrance, so I got in to ensure privacy.
As I sat in my car, I noticed a male employee standing at the door, holding it open while glaring at me. His expression was unmistakably hostile. I momentarily disengaged from my call, confused by his demeanor. As I backed out of my parking spot and pulled forward, I realized he was still there, staring intensely. To make matters worse, I had my autistic child with me, who became visibly distressed by the unsettling behavior of this man.
Feeling increasingly uncomfortable, I rolled down my window and asked if I could help him. His response was both vague and accusatory: he claimed he saw me leave the store with "something" in my hand. At that moment, I was completely taken aback. The only items I had were my purse and my phone, the latter of which I was clearly using for my conversation.
When I mentioned my purse, his response dripped with sarcasm: "Oh, your purse." It became evident that he was accusing me of theft, albeit in a passive-aggressive and ambiguous manner. If he truly suspected wrongdoing, he had multiple ways to handle the situation professionally.
1. If he genuinely believed I was stealing, he should have approached me directly and appropriately.
2. If he was unsure, he should have been discreet rather than publicly casting suspicion.
3. If he was going to make accusations, he should have had actual evidence instead of baseless assumptions.
This experience was not only uncomfortable but also completely inappropriate. No customer should be treated with suspicion without cause, let alone in such an unprofessional and unsettling manner.
