2 /5 MMM: Ive been to Tam Commons many times since I live nearby. I pretty much only order the burger because any time Ive tried other menu items they have not been as good.
Overall its a solid place. Recently though I took a closer look at my check after my wife and I had a burger, a salad, a beer, and a drink for about 80 dollars. I tipped 20 percent, but I noticed that the percentage was calculated on the subtotal, the mandatory surcharge, and the tax. That does not sit right with me. In restaurants the tip is always calculated on the food and drink subtotal only.
You also dont see an itemized check until after you pay because everything runs through the iPad. You only see the total and suggested tip options of 20, 22, and 25 percent. For a place that uses a take a number system rather than full table service, it feels excessive to be nudged toward tipping 20 percent or more on an already inflated total.
I still like the food and the space , but the way the surcharge and tip are handled has really taken some of the shine off the experience for me.
